Dr. Ephrem Gebrehana Adem is an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Subspecialist in Advanced Trauma and Arthroplasty at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (HUCSH). He currently serves as President of the Ethiopian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (ESOT), where he plays a leading role in shaping national orthopedic and trauma care standards.
Dr. Ephrem is a dedicated clinician, academician and researcher with over a decade of professional service. He founded the Orthopedic Department at HUCSH and has served as Academic and Clinical Director of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences. As the long-serving manager of the SIGN Fracture Care Program at Hawassa, he has been instrumental in improving access to quality orthopedic care for underserved patients.
His research focuses on orthopedic trauma, neglected musculoskeletal injuries and the implementation of trauma systems in resource-limited settings. He has led several national and international studies, including the WHO Trauma Registry project and the Bone Setting Associated Disability (BOSAD) project, and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals such as JBJS, BMC Emergency Medicine and European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology.
A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Dr. Ephrem completed his undergraduate medical school from Hawassa University, residency program from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia and his fellowship at Assiut University, Egypt. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, and advancing orthopedic surgery in Ethiopia
