Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma and Spine Surgery
Dr. Mengistu G Mengesha is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spine Surgeon and Assistant Professor at Hawassa University, Ethiopia. He is Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, leading the Spine Unit and the CORE Clinical Research Group. Dr. Mengesha finished his undergraduate medical school from Mekelle University and postgraduate residency program from Addis Ababa University. After completing his Spine Fellowship at Ganga Hospital, India, in 2023, he established one of the first dedicated spine services in Southern Ethiopia. His clinical expertise spans complex spine reconstruction and orthopedic trauma, with strong dedication to advancing surgical education and research in resource-limited settings.
Dr. Mengesha has been a national lead for the COVIDSurg and GlobalSurg collaboratives, contributing to high-impact studies published in The Lancet, BJS, and Anaesthesia. He is Principal Investigator of the MICROS, BOSAD, and STOPUS studies, representing major multicenter collaborations. He has authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications at JBJS, European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology and produced several educational resources and training materials.
Currently, he serves as Secretary General of the Ethiopian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (ESOT) and is an active member of multiple professional bodies including AO Spine, AO Trauma, SICOT, COSECSA and the Ethiopian Medical Association. His work focuses on improving access, outcomes and equity in musculoskeletal care across Ethiopia and globally.
