Approaching sustainable development through international collaboration
The Northwest Orthopaedic Trauma Alliance for Africa (NOTAA) has made a significant contribution to the development and expansion of orthopedic services at Hawassa University since its establishment in collaboration with the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology. Since hosting the first Ethiopian Residents Day in 2017 at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, NOTAA has remained an active partner in advancing orthopedic education and patient care. Their support includes donations of essential surgical equipment and educational materials, which have enhanced both clinical service and training quality.
NOTAA has also played a key role in capacity building through regular training programs for ward nurses and residents, focusing on trauma care, perioperative management, and patient safety. Additionally, they have encouraged and supported resident-led research activities, fostering a culture of academic growth and evidence-based practice. Their ongoing collaboration continues to strengthen the department’s mission to deliver high quality, sustainable orthopedic care in southern Ethiopia.
In September 2025, NOTAA sponsored Dr. Mengistu G. Mengesha, Chair of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at Hawassa University, to visit the United Kingdom and participate in the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Annual Meeting in Liverpool. During this visit, Dr. Mengistu also completed a one-week clinical observership under the mentorship of Dr. Alex Becker, gaining valuable exposure to advance orthopedic and trauma practices. This opportunity reflects NOTAA’s continued commitment to professional development, international collaboration, and the advancement of orthopedic care and leadership in Ethiopia.
